Sažetak
Security of energy supply, competitiveness, sustainability and the use of locally available renewable energy sources to meet the energy needs have become important factors in creating a low carbon society. However, the analysis carried out for low carbon systems until 2050 indicates that the achievement of these goals requires a high share of biomass. In order to maximise use of all biomass components from fields and forests to final products integration of different conversion technologies into single facility called bio-refinery is desired. Integration of different bio-refineries into existing biomass processing superstructure and optimisation of the same superstructure is very challenging but, with application of special optimisation methods optimal structure can be find. In this paper, the economic analysis, structural design of the bio-refinery concept and finding optimal structure will be conducted by applying the process network synthesis method and software tool PNS Studio. The Process Network Synthesis framework uses the p-graph method to create a process structure with the aim to find the optimal structure for the analysed system. Application of the process network synthesis framework for analysis of biomass superstructure provides wider compatibility in case of structure upgrading with different biomass conversion technologies, additional biomass resources and adjusting for any other national or regional energy system. Developed model will be implemented on the case of Croatia with emphasise on agricultural and forest residues and unused agricultural land. Moreover, the influence of various factors on the biomass conversion pathways will be examined.
