Sažetak
The presentation deals with Michel Foucault’s usage of the language of war-making to interpret social relations. By turning around the famous Clausewitz’s statement about war as a continuation of politics by other means, Foucault, through the 1970s, in an ambivalent way talked and wrote about politics as a continuation of war with other means. In the analysis of social relations as the relations of power, Foucault profusely used war-waging metaphors of strategies and tactics, sometimes almost without metaphorical distance. There are three primary goals of this presentation. First, in the genre of the hermeneutics of Foucault, to reconstruct the development and the demise of the discourse of war in Foucault as it appears in his books, lectures, interviews and essays. The second is to compare Foucault with other authors who used similar language within a different theoretical context, such as Engels or Gramsci within the Marxist paradigm, in order to better profile the advantages and limits of these authors’ approaches by the means of the mutual comparison. The third goal is to answer some important questions about the causes and the purposes of the discourse of war in interpreting the social, and its political actuality: why is it employed and with what effect, in the societal and the academic arena of the past and the present? As the trademark phrase inserted in the title suggests: the theoretical underpinning for this last operation is found in the classic book on metaphors by Lakoff and Johnson claiming that conceptual metaphors shape our thinking and, consequently, our social world which we interpret and in which we act.
