Sažetak
Introduction: Change of direction (COD) ability is defined as a rapid whole-body movement with change of direction (Brughelli et al., 2008) and is commonly considered to be highly related to power training. Due to few research studies investigating the issue that showed small to trivial correlations between indirect and direct power measures, especially unilateral ones, the aim of this study was to investigate relationship between bilateral and unilateral power measures and horizontal and lateral COD ability. Methods: 97 physically active men participated in this study and were assessed by 2 COD tests (20yd shuttle run – 20yd and lateral stepping - LS), bilateral and unilateral vertical jump height (BVJ, UVJr, UVJl), bilateral and unilateral long jump (BLJ, ULJr, ULJl), ) and power production during vertical jumps (Pb, Pl, Pr). Power measures were normalized due to effective BW for each subject according to recommended body-size indices for muscle strength, power and movement performance (Jaric et al., 2005). Correlations were determined using Pearson’s r. Statistical significance was accepted at p<0.05. Results: Correlations between power and COD tests were rather low ; for 20 yd (r=-0, 06 for bilateral, r=-0, 11 for right leg, and r=-0, 08 for the left one) ; for LS (r= -0, 03 for bilateral, r=-0, 03 for right leg, and r=-0, 00 for the left one). The highest relationships were between 20yd and BLJ (r=-0, 47, p<0, 05). Lateral stepping had highest relationship with ULJl (r=-0, 33, p<0.05) and ULJr (r= -0, 22, p<0, 05), but no significant relations with any other measure, except with 20 yd (r=0, 40, p<0, 05). Discussion: Results suggest that unilateral and bilateral power measures (W) are poor predictors of COD in physically active men which is consistent with other investigations (Markovic, 2007 ; Peterson et al., 2006). The strongest relationship is shown between 20yd test and BLJ (indirect power evaluation) (r=-0, 47) which is probably due to similarity in horizontal movement pattern. Interestingly, LS isn’t significantly related to any of the measures, but poorly (r<-0, 33, p<0, 05) with unilateral LJ tests and could be explained by greater importance of unilateral movement patterns.
