Sažetak
This paper presents the results of the research on positive examples of encouraging reading among adolescent boys and girls. The findings of several international surveys indicate that boys have lower reading attainment in comparison to girls. Also, numerous research studies connect adolescent boys’ academic failure to their low reading engagement, pointing out that secondary-school boys are the group most likely to state that reading is boring, that they find it hard to find interesting books, and that they only read at school. In this research study, we examine reading habits and various environmental influences on reading among adolescents. The research consisted of series of focus group interviews with parents, teachers, librarians and adolescent boys, focusing on their experiences/observations of boys reading habits and attitudes, library use, reading motivation as well as factors that prevent boys from reading. The research findings indicate that boys who are avid readers prefer to read adventure, science fiction or mystery books. The focus group participants make a strict distinction between reading for pleasure and reading for school purpose. Furthermore, it is commonly noticed that their preferred literature is rarely found at school libraries and is commonly rented at local libraries or purchased. The study results indicate that there are several factors which prevent boys from reading, such as lack of free time, uninteresting and difficult books on the school reading lists, and absence of positive male role models.
