Sažetak
Waste management in the EU is not only an issue of environment and health protection, but also a highly important issue of economy. Because of this, in the realisation of the Europa 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, the EU turned to the circular economy system, i.e. recycling and usage of primary materials coming from waste which, with increased energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources, becomes a key element in future EU development. The Republic of Croatia is currently at the beginning of the creation of an integrated system of waste management, with a historical opportunity to “skip the mistakes” made by other member states, and constitute its system on the very principles of circular economy. Although this approach means that we are facing numerous problems, at the same time, it represents a huge development opportunity. This work brings an overview of the current waste management situation in Croatia, as well as proposals for improvement of the existing system in accordance with the new trends of circular economy.
