Sažetak
All lessons are based on curriculum – that is, what is intended that students learn and the fundamental goal of the lecture is to increase the learning of students. However, focusing students’ attention during lectures, motivating their interests in a topic or subject and involving students actively in the lecture is vital for effective learning. Most teachers have seen the reactions students can have to tasks and activities that they do not find engaging: the rolling eyes, the unfocused behaviour and the cries of “Not again!” This workshop provides some strategies and practical techniques that can be used to better “activate” materials and tasks in the language classroom. These techniques, then, are tools to make materials and tasks more interactive and more student-centred, encouraging students to take more responsibility for their own learning. This workshop demonstrates activating techniques through several stages which include: warm up activities, brainstorming, mind maps, elicitation, gapping, and adaptation/extension. This practical workshop is intended for all students and teachers of LSP dealing with either civil or mechanical engineering, presenting interesting and useful materials that can be used in teaching Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) to tertiary education students. Today’s students are tomorrow’s professionals who can do a lot in this interesting field so it is our duty to get them interested in the topics that are of vital interest to all of us as well as to equip them with substantial knowledge in LSP (English/German for Civil/Mechanical Engineering) that might be needed in their future professional and vocational environment.
