Sažetak
Informed consent requires of patients to be equal partners with their doctors, competent decision-makers, and to take an active role in doctor-patient communication. And yet, so many studies have shown that patients recall or understand only a half of what is being said to them by doctors. The aim of this study was to explore the way the communication process may be improved by paying more attention to patient’s words. Written information sheets prepared by doctors, specialists in abdominal surgery, for patients undergoing cholecystectomy, were tested for comprehension on 150 patients split into 3 educational-level groups - primary, secondary, and higher education. The Cloze test procedure was applied, with every fifth word missing. Since the results showed poor comprehension of the information sheets, a special method was used to improve their readability and comprehension, drawing on the importance of simple, easy-to-understand language. Typical patient wordings were selected for each educational level from a total of 150 patient narratives collected during interviewing. The patient-worded information sheets were then tested for comprehension on new patients, using the same Cloze procedure as with doctor-developed information sheets. The results are compared and presented for each educational level separately. The obtained findings indicate to the importance of patient participation in developing informed consent patient information, and to the method of improving comprehension of educational patient materials in general.
