Sažetak
This article deals with second language acquisition of two Croatian lecturers at the German language department of the Faculty for humanities and social sciences in Rijeka, Croatia. Based on their language biographies and their self evaluation their language competencies were evaluated. Croatian is the mother-tongue of both lecturers a they both acquired German as a second language. The language biographies basically differ based on the fact that one of the lecturers was raised in Germany and went to school there, whereas the other one acquired German in Croatia, i.e. in school and lateron at the University, apart from short stays in Germany to visit her relatives. The lecturer who lived in Germany left it when she graduated from high school and then studied German language and literature and Roman language and literature in Croatia. Eventually, comparison of both language biographies should provide an answer to the question, if foreign language acquisition abroad, i.e. in the language's country of origin is easier and results in a better and higher language competency. Language competencies of the two lecturers were assessed by self evaluation.
