Sažetak
Recent preparations for national database of butterfly distribution records in Croatia resulted into around 53000 records across the 19th and 20th century. The overall picture showed a total of 193 species. Many species and subspecies are poorly known because much of Croatia has not been surveyed adequately and problems of categorizing a poorly-documented fauna will be pointed. Some of species suffered major losses in distribution and large numbers of butterflies are threatened due to rapid land-use change. They include several endemic subspecies that are restricted to just one or two sites in the entire country. Identified sites need to be protected under national law and managed to maintain their survival. In the absence of substantial historical information on abundance changes, we used the distribution change criteria of IUCN to create a new list of threatened butterflies of Croatia (Sasic & Kucinic, 2004). A Red book of threatened butterflies of Croatia is under preparation (Sasic, Mihoci & Kucinic, under prep). All threatened species were legally protected (Official gazette, No. 70/05, 99/09). More and more scientific results become available about the ecological requirements of endangered butterflies and the effects of nature management practice, but in Croatia the gap between the information about species requirements and local management measures is growing.
