Sažetak
Jakov Bunić (1469-1534) was a Croatian humanist poet from Ragusa, famous for his two epic poems written in Latin: De raptu Cerberi and De vita et gestis Christi. This other work is one of the first epics in Western European humanist literature to recount the New Testament in verse, published in Rome in 1526. The epic is, as can be seen from the dedicatory poems, composed in the spirit of Counter- Reformation. Although written before the official beginning of the Counter-Reformation, it can be viewed as the Catholic answer to the reformation actions of those times. This work explores the way in which the principles of Catholic faith have been molded into the framework of humanist literary norms, and determines which of the fundamental themes of the Reformation polemics can be found within the epic (e. g. laudation of the Holy Eucharist, the role of the Virgin Mary, etc.). It shows how the composition and especially the motives of Bunić’ epic reflect the main religious arguments discussed throughout Europe in this time of change.
