Sažetak
The paper analyses population development on the Iž Island during the period from 1857 to 2011 (with special focus on the period after 1971) and its impact on the island's landscape. According to the last census, 615 persons live on the island, which is 71.8 % less than in 1948. Landscape changes depended on the demographic, but also on the socio-political circumstances. During the last hundred years we can record three stages in landscape changes. The processes that have influenced it were agrarian over-population, emigration and development of tourism. From 1857 to 1921 island's population and cultivated areas increased. That led to agrarian over-population so many islanders emigrated from the island. Due to emigration, island's population and cultivated areas decreased, that is, island was affected by the processes of deruralization, deagrarianization, and depopulation. Since 1970’s development of tourism affected landscape by the processes of tertiarization and intensive housing construction. Today’s island's landscape is depopulated and affected by deagrarianization. This work, through the analysis of the different spatial data, demographic features of the island and the repeated field observations, has the intention to indicate a landscape changes of the Iž Island influenced by dominant processes of depopulation and ageing.
