Sažetak
After years of neglecting our future being today, we are witnessing the 6th wave of innovation where sustainability, industrial ecology, renewable energy and green nanotechnology are main postulates. Thanks to the significant changes in technological processes, which assured transformation of undesirable waste to a valuable resource, idea of using performance based materials is finally coming to life. Unfortunately, regulations still do not allow adjustment to locally available materials and rather insist on large safety factors instead of the engineering logic. Small steps are done with 7th basic requirement for construction, where the reuse or recyclability of the construction materials, durability and use of environmentally compatible raw and secondary materials in the construction works are emphasized. Due to the fact that concrete is produced locally with short transportation routes, environmental requirements can easily be satisfied. To assure further decrease of CO2 emissions and energy consumption, different alternative materials, mostly by-products of other industries, are used as binders, aggregates or reinforcement. Within this paper, innovative concrete products developed at Department of Materials of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Civil engineering will be presented.
