Sažetak
Active immunization is one of the greatest advancements in modern medicine. Because of the time correlation between vaccination and some neurological symptoms, this relationship is often described as causal. With the development of new vaccines, an increasing number of autoimmune side effects of the central and peripheral nervous systems are reported. It is assumed that vaccination, as an immune stimulus, can trigger an autoimmune reaction in the host. A large number of papers, ranging from casereports to meta-analysis, have demonstrated the (un)relatedness of vaccination and Guillain-Barré syndrome, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, encephalitis, transverse myelitis, hypotonic-hyporesponsive episodes, sudden infant death syndrome, multiple sclerosis, narcolepsy and other. Based on epidemiological studies of neurological side effects of vaccines conducted so far, it can be concluded that even when a complication occurs, there is usually no consequential permanent neurological dysfunction present. An extensive critical review of the literature reveals that individuals can extremely rarely develop a certain limited pattern of autoimmunity after administration of some vaccines, and potentially the most serious neurological manifestations are certainly those with central and peripheral nervous systems involvement. Anyhow, for the greatest number of people (estimated at more than 99.9%), the administration of vaccines does not increase the risk for the occurrence of systemic autoimmune diseases and therefore should be applied according to current recommendations in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality in all age groups.
