Sažetak
Copper complexes of the heterocyclic aromatic compounds have been studied extensively due to their diverse physical and chemical properties. By combining different organic ligands they have potential applications in biomedicine, industry, environment protection and materials science. Due to planar structure of heterocyclic aromatic ligands, their complexes are potential chelating agents for the DNA molecule. For this reason, bipyridine, phenantroline and similar ligands were studied for their biological activities. It was shown that metal complexes are usually more active then ligands alone. Also, because of importance of copper in biology, copper(II) complexes with aminoacids are used as model systems for studying interactions in proteins and cellular processes. In this study, a new complex of copper with phenantroline and L-serine was prepared, [Cu(ser)(H2O)(phen)]2SO4 (ser = L- serine ; phen = 1, 10-phenantroline). Complex was prepared by solvothermal synthesis and structurally characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Studied compound crystalizes in monoclinic crystal system, space group P21, a = 6, 804(6) Å, b = 21, 888(7) Å, c = 12, 487(6) Å ; β = 102, 50(2)° ; Z = 8. Crystal structure showed that complex has distorted square pyramidal geometry. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds are present between sulfate anion and serine ligand (O– H∙∙∙O, N–H∙∙∙O), sulfate anion and coordinated water molecule (O–H∙∙∙O), two serine hydroxyl groups (O–H∙∙∙O), with D∙∙∙A distances 2, 86– 3, 44 Å.
