Sažetak
This paper illustrates that Dr. Seuss work is a fruitful example of an artist who tried to shake his audience out of their comfort zone and cause them to rethink their assumptions. There are many ways of learning how to read, but children who are read to regularly at a very young age become open to different elements of language. This paper discusses the relationship between child development and children’s literature by displaying ways in which children acquire cognitive skills, reading and language skills, as well as social and emotional skills. The language in Dr. Seuss books promotes phonetic abilities which are important in the development reading skills. Children can explore early childhood concepts while using rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, they can develop everyday concepts such as the understanding spatial concepts, as well as learn about body parts and opposites, counting and colours and various codes of behaviour. Teaching sounds along with the letters of the alphabet is important, as it can help a child see how sounds are related to reading and writing. Reading picture books with a child develops phonological awareness, the ability to hear and use the smaller sounds in word, vocabulary, knowing how to handle a book, follow text on pages and notice the words. Books by Dr. Seuss are the classics also due to Dr. Seuss’s illustrations, because in the best picture books, the illustrations create as much of the experience as the written text.
