Sažetak
“Cinderella” is one of the oldest and probably favourite fairy tales for children. It is equally attractive to both boys and girls because children of both sexes are confronted with sibling rivalry, fear of abandonment, rejection by their (step) parents, or issues of power. While studying this fairy tale, one can detect every aspect of confrontation between the followers and the opponents of fairy tales pertaining to violence, symbolism, lack of or too much imagination. The hypothesis of this work suggests that fairy tales do not negatively affect children in any of the above-mentioned categories. After reviewing relevant studies on children’s literature and child development, fairy tales in general, and by means of the analysis of Charles Perrault’s “Cinderella, ” it was concluded that fairy tales have a beneficial influence on children’s cognitive and social development in the categories of moral and reading development, reading habits, benefits of learning by observation, imagination and divergent thinking.
