Sažetak
As the productivity of European agriculture is relatively high, Europe is a very important productive supplier of food in the world. For example, mean cereal yields in the EU countries are around 60% higher than the world average. However, increasingly frequent extreme weather events, due to global climate change, are causing a substantial increase in agricultural risk throughout Europe. Severe droughts, heat stresses, heavy rains, floods, frosts, hail-storms, strong winds and wildfires inflict severe damage and high economic losses on European agriculture, livestock, range-land and forestry. Agriculture, livestock, range-land and forestry in the Mediterranean region seems to be more vulnerable the in other European regions. Due to higher air temperature, there will be more favourable conditions for silage maize in north-western Europe and winter wheat in the central Europe. Earlier beginning of spring phelogical stages of plants and in lengthening of growing season, as well as changes in high mountain vegetation types, in wine quality in the Mediterranean region and in marine biodiversity have already been observed Therefore, an early warning system and a monthly and seasonal agrometeorological forecast, particularly for drought, should be introduced or improved where it is already in place. Due to potential changes in agriculture, a group of multidisciplinary intermediaries should help farmers use the available agrometeorological information for their own farming systems.
