Sažetak
This chapter presents some of the recent advances in crystal engineering concerning the synthesis of metastable solid tautomers by design. It discusses the methods and supramolecular rules that can be used for design and controllable synthesis of such multicomponent molecular solids. Finally, the chapter presents some of the most illustrative examples of cocrystal systems comprising more tautomeric forms reported to date. In the supramolecular synthon approach, a crystal structure is viewed as a network of molecules interconnected by specific interactions. This allows a retrosynthesis of a crystal. The most extensive studies of solid-state proton transfer have been undertaken on two types of systems: complexes or salts and cocrystals of carboxylic acid with nitrogen bases, and carboxylic acid dimers. The idea of synthesizing metastable tautomers by cocrystallization logically follows from the observation that each tautomer has very different functionalities and inherently different potential for connecting with its environment.
