Sažetak
The article argues that only a culturally oriented and semiotically founded approach can live up to the task of describing the nature of literariness in a society dominated by the visual. The importance of including the visual aspects of literature into the work of interpretation is illustrated by several examples dealing with cross-cultural interpretation of U.S.-American literature.
