Sažetak
The automotive industry requires high quality of functional and decorative seams in order to provide passenger safety. The sewability of car seats is of great importance for seam quality but also to insure an economically productive process. A good sewing performance is the result of a good interaction of fabric properties and sewing conditions. Composite materials (woven and knit fabric with polyurethane foam backing) used for the production of car seats were sewn with different needle thickness dependent on sewing thread thickness to study the influence of sewing thread properties on the sewing performance. Based on the results it was found that the quality and strength of the seam is influenced by the thread tension and needle thickness. Higher thread tension cause thread breakage and material damage while lower thread tension cause missing stiches. Good sewability and trouble-free stich formation cannot be processed without the alignment of fabric, sewing needle and sewing thread.
