Sažetak
In his 1990 book on the limits of interpretation, Eco proposed a theory enabling the reader to perform a well-balanced act of interpretation while preserving his or her interpretive freedom. He suggests that an interpretation ought to take into account more than a single instance usually made central by individual critical schools of thought, and terms the three dimensions he claims keep the interpretive act balanced intention auctoris (intention of the author), intentio operis (intention of the work) and intentio lectoris (intention of the reader). This paper aims at complementing Eco's three "intentions" (corresponding with the interpretive frameworks of positivist, structuralist and reader-response theories) by introducing the dimension of reading made central by various schools of more recent culturally oriented literary scholarship. It discusses what it calls the intention of the mediator (intentio mediatoris) as an instance contributing to specific interpretive acts as well as to the modelling of culture and history in a wider community.
