Sažetak
Traffic congestion in air and on the ground is air transportation industry reality. Airports have grown to systems where various other types of traffic, in addition to aircraft, are essential for their function to be fulfilled. Aircraft and various vehicles merge and counteract on airport tarmac, and manoeuvring area. Situation is made more complex by poor visibility due to the precipitation or fog, and also quite often by flight crew being unfamiliar with particular airport. All mentioned factors render surveillance and management of airport surface traffic very complex and demanding. That was the reason for the introduction of early support systems almost quarter a century ago. Initial basic systems have evolved in those that offer more than raw data about traffic situation today. Universal solution to this problem is made more complex due to nature and limitation of each applied system today. Contemporary approach in fulfilling this task has still not been universal despite the fact that the problem is present worldwide. Therefore good knowledge about available systems is needed for appropriate solution to be idetified in the case of Croatian and Slovenian airports and traffic situation. The paper is to present events and accidents that have demonstrated the severity and the importance of this problem. Potentially dangerous situations have been listed among different traffic modes at airport manoeuvring areas as well as historical overview and current status together with applied systems and developing traffic monitoring and management.
