Sažetak
In this paper the author describes urban vernacular of the town of Osijek, Croatia, which was used in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Due to its geographical position on the crossroads of different nations, cultures, religions as well as political and economic interests, Osijek experienced many social and ethnic changes during the turbulent history of Croatia. After the liberation from Turkish rule, the Vienna Court settled the military Fortress of Osijek with soldiers and their commanding officers stemming from different parts of the Austrian Kingdom, as well as with all types of public officials and craftsmen to support the functioning of the military headquarters of Osijek. During the rule of Maria Theresia several large groups of German speaking population from Austria, Baden-Württemberg, Hessia and Bavaria moved to Osijek. According to the census of 1900, Germans made up 60% of the entire population in Osijek. In order to adapt to the everyday reality, domicile Croatians, Hungarians and Serbs, learnt German by communicating with their new neighbours, city officials, clerks, teachers, craftsmen and shop-keepers in their town. This version of German, interwoven with the elements of Croatian, Serbian and Hungarian was called Esseker Deutsch or Essekerisch (the name stemming from the ancient German dialect form of the name of Osijek) and was used almost exclusively in its spoken form.
