Sažetak
Knowing English for Specific Purposes is a common expectation on an increasingly competitive job market. Tertiary level teachers of ESP have to satisfy this expectation, often working with large groups and within a limited number of contact hours. It is, therefore, paramount that the language is taught efficiently. Among the many methods of teaching ESP, using authentic materials is one that prepares students for real-life communication using up-to-date, specialized vocabulary while motivating students by being relevant. In this article, we will firstly define authentic materials. Then, we will give a brief review of the literature on the advantages and disadvantages of this method in ESP in general and in teaching business English in particular. A coursebook which is successfully built around authentic materials could counter some of the arguments against using authentic materials, while providing many of the benefits associated with this method. The third part of the article will critically analyse Trappe and Tullis’s Intelligent Business Upper Intermediate Coursebook (2006), a book that uses authentic materials to develop certain skills. Our analysis will address the following key questions: 1) To what extent do Trappe and Tullis use authentic materials? 2) Are these materials used in an authentic way? 3) How could such a coursebook be improved to prepare students for a multinational work environment?
