Sažetak
The Little Bittern is a widespread but secretive breeding species in Europe, localized to wetlands with shallow waters with constant water level and dense sedge and reed beds. It is a regular breeding bird and a fully migratory species in Croatia, distributed in the continental lowland part along large rivers, their floodplains and fishponds. It also breeds in the Mediterranean part of Croatia. The Croatian estimated breeding population is 1.200-2.200 pairs. The birds arrive in Croatia during late April and the autumn migration starts in September. Only 11 recoveries have been reported, mostly from adult birds caught in mist-nests at ringing camps. Out of these, seven are local recoveries, while two recoveries outside Croatia (Italy and Hungary) confirm extensive post-breeding dispersal. Two recoveries of foreign birds (the Czech Republic and Hungary) confirm the south-westerly direction of migration of birds originating from central Europe. Migration routes, stopover and wintering sites of the Croatian population are unknown.
