Sažetak
The cotton and its blends are the most commonly used textile materials in the design and production of protective clothing. However, as the cellulose textiles are the most flammable materials, it is necessary to improve its flame retardancy. The government regulations have been the driving force for developing durable flame retardants (FR) finishes for textile to improve its performance and to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Phosphorus-based FR are widely used for cotton-based materials. Their action mechanism involves phosphorylation reaction with cellulose, which inhibits the formation of flammable levoglucosan, reducing the fuel supply. It is well known that its efficacy is enhanced by the addition of nitrogen compounds, although these additives have limited FR function. This paper investigates the effect of urea with ammonium hydrogen phosphate and ammonium polyphosphate for achieving cotton flame retardancy. The synergism between urea and these two well know FR was calculated. Thermal properties of treated cotton fabrics were determined by Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), and Microscale Combustion Calorimeter (MCC).
