Sažetak
The eastern Adriatic coastal area contains extensive karst areas, of which a part has been drowned during current interglacial period, between about 14, 000 and 5, 000 years ago, due to the rise in sea level. Most Late Quaternary tephra data of the Campanian provenance (CP) are related to the western Adriatic shelf and in the Mid-Adriatic Deep, while on the eastern Adriatic tephra deposits are much less frequently reported. The Croatian karst region with its extensive erosion of the soil cover during the Holocene has a rather low potential for terrestrial preservation of discrete tephra layers. The exception are the loess deposits of Susak island (N. Adriatic) which contain three MIS 3 tephra layers of CP and Crvena stijena (Montenegro) cave deposits containing Campanian Ignimbrite (CI). Lake Shkodra (Albania/Montenegro) sediments contain among others Agnano Monte Spino (AMS) and Avellino tephra. Two Holocene tephra layers are also found in lagoons on Mljet Island (S. Adriatic). During the past four years extensive piston coring of Croatian coastal lakes and lagoons along the Eastern Adriatic coast allowed determination and identification of tephra layers, which were not previously known. The dating of sediments from lakes and marine lagoons so far reviled the existence of tephra ranging from NYT (Neapolitan Yellow Tuff) to AMST. In the central Dalmatia (near the city of Split), in a paleosol profile overlying flysch deposits an unique tephra layer was discovered probably related to Campanian Ignimbrite (CI). The results of research related to the distribution and identification of Late Quaternary tephra along the eastern Adriatic coast revealed that although the environmental conditions during the Holocene did not favor survival of undisturbed tephra layers they were discovered in terrestrial, lake and marine environments. This new research allows further delineation of known tephra stratigraphic markers in the central Mediterranean region.
