Sažetak
The development of phonological awareness is a crucial process in every person’s life for it has a central role in the development of a person’s literacy. It is developed in the preschool and early elementary school period and results in the ability to manipulate utterances and smaller units of speech. The thesis reports on a research study conducted with fourth grade elementary school pupils. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the participants had developed phonological awareness and to test their ability to pronounce properly words containing the researched phonemes: /r/, /v/, /θ/ and /ð/. The research was done individually with each pupil. The pupils were presented with three tasks ; in the first task the pupils had to find the intruder between the pronounced words, the second task required them to choose between two logatomes, choosing the sound which sounded English to them, and in the third task they had to name the images they saw on the flashcards. The pupils were rather successful in tasks 1 and 2 and could distinguish between the English and Croatian phonemes. However, task 3 caused problems with the pronunciation of the phonemes /v/, /θ/ and /ð/. These results indicate that some changes should be made in the English lessons where more time should be dedicated to learning native-like pronunciation.
