Sažetak
The paper describes the current situation in the Western Balkan six countries (after Croatia joined the EU)and the challenges they face in carrying out reforms necessary for their own development and for joining the EU. The paper explains why tackling corruption may be the most serious and direct way how the EU and the international community at large can help instigate internal changes in Western Balkan countries. Thinking about long-term goals, however, it is the investment in research and education that leads to genuine transformations of these societies.
