Sažetak
City of Osijek is the capital of the eastern agricultural region of Croatia. Half of the buses used in public transportation of Osijek are old and in a bad shape, to satisfy European Union’s standards the replacement of such buses will be required. As Osijek is in the centre of agricultural region that has great potential for biodiesel production, usage of such fuel in public transportation would contribute in promotion of biofuels and promotion of public transportation as well. Cities such as Zagreb and Rijeka have done some research concerning the usage of biodiesel in public transportation but no such research has been done for Osijek. As Osijek is a medium size city the usage of biodiesel could be considered not only for the buses of inner city public transportation company but for the company that is providing transport to the surrounding areas of Osijek as well. This way a sort of a ring, with Osijek in centre, could be created where biodiesel would be used. With further development throughout the years this ring could be expanded. The aim of this thesis is to examine the possibilities of using alternative fuel, such as biodiesel, in public transportation in the city of Osijek. I will describe development of such projects in the European Union with special emphasis on the cities which were an example for initiating the idea of using biodiesel in public transportation in Croatia. Furthermore, I will investigate and describe the main barriers causing inefficient implementation of biodiesel usage and production in Croatia. I attempt to examine the government’s policy regarding the biodiesel issue and to evaluate the interest of local government in projects such as usage of biodiesel in public transportation.
