Sažetak
The article uses the examples of literary and journalistic texts in Latin, Croatian and German to depict the image of Hungarians in the Croatian lands from the sixteenth until the nineteenth century. It varied from Hungarophilia — in the first centuries of the researched period – to Hungarophobia – mostly present in the mid-nineteenth century, but most frequently there was a combination of positive and negative stereotypes in varying proportions. From earlier centuries, more sources regarding the image of the common state—the Kingdom of Hungary–Croatia—came down to us, and in the nineteenth century the sources on the Hungarians are abundant. National stereotypes in Croatia in the earlier period were most efficiently shaped, maintained and spread by literature, and from the nineteenth century onwards, this function was primarily, though not exclusively, taken over by newspapers, brochures and flyers. In the earlier periods the Hungarophilia was caused by personal and family relationships between the Croatian and Hungarian nobility and also by mutual political, economic and social interests. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, the image of the Hungarians obtained negative elements. The Hungarophobia culminated in the revolutionary years of 1848–1849, when all the negative elements of the perception of Hungarians were accentuated. The Hungarians were seen as the oppressors of Croatian national thought, as assimilators and as an Asian element in European culture, and the Hungarian language, as one of the most important elements for building national identity, was perceived as barbaric and incomprehensible. After the Hungarian revolution the image of the Hungarians again became more positive, but never reached the same extent of sympathy that it had in earlier periods.
