Andrija Torkvat Brlić, 1848–1849, reconciliation of Croatians and Hungarians
Sažetak
This article deals with the attitude of Andrija Torkvat Brlić, a prominent Croatian politician, publicist and linguist, towards the Hungarians during the revolutionary years of 1848–1849. That attitude altered from an extremely negative and hostile one prevailing until the end of 1848, when he participated in both the armed conflict and war of propaganda against the Hungarians, to public advocacy of reconciliation with the Hungarians in the spring of 1849, under the influence of his contacts with the Polish immigrants. The change in Brlić’s political views was caused, besides the influence of Polish immigrants, by the centralistic politics of the Austrian government. The leadership of the Polish immigration in Paris accepted some elements of the federalist conception of Austro–Slavism and managed to win over Brlić for the idea of Croato-Hungarian reconciliation, which was one of the prerequisites for the renewal of the Polish state. After returning to the country in the spring of 1849, Brlić unsuccessfully attempted to persuade Ban Jelačić and other important political factors in Croatia to accept the politics of reconciliation with the Hungarians.
