Sažetak
Abstract Most of the electromagnetic design problems are very hard or even impossible to solve analytically, and they usually have to be solved by numerical methods. The best options for carrying out the required numerical simulations is to use some of the high quality software solutions available on the market. Such software solutions usually provide all the necessary components needed to carry out numerical simulations, such as a CAD component for drawing the geometry of the objects, mesh generators for spatial discretization of the geometry, and a numerical solver. The purpose of this paper is to show that the free, open source, software solutions can be used as an alternative to the commercial solutions. The paper describes the use of two software packages, Elmer and Salome, by providing a simulation example in the form of step by step tutorial. The example used is a simulation of two, round shaped, wire loops for the purpose of obtaining the self and mutual inductance of the loops. Salome is used for creating a geometry and spatial discretization, while Elmer is used to carry out the numerical simulation by using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The drawbacks of the described open source solutions are discussed in the paper
