Sažetak
Through an analysis of authoritative literary sources, the articles, polemical papers and speeches in the sabor of Ante Starčević, as well as the journal articles and other writings of Eugen Kvaternik, the brochure of David Starčević, and the Slaviteljem Jelačića bana (To the celebrators of ban Jelačić), the author reveals the interpretation of the oeuvre of ban Josip Jelačić by the Party of Law, which was most clearly manifested during the inauguration of the monument erected in honour of Jelačić and the parallel celebrations organised by the National Party in front of the staue itself. Contrary to the National Party and its supporters — for whom the Jelačić monument became the symbol of resistance to Hungarian hegemony and to the government of ban Levin Rauch — the Party of Law identified the statue with the abandonment of Croation independence and of the interests of the Croatian nation in favour of Austria, the chief opponent of Croatia and the greatest threat to her survival. The celebration of Jelačić, for whom, from the perspective of the Party of Law, the only sacrament was the „unity and greatness of the Austrian Empire”, was regarded by them as the manifestation of a political will whose ultimate aim was the merging of Croatia and of the Croatian people into the „Austrian”, that is, „German sea”. Accordingly, they treated those who honoured the monument as mere traitors who were inferior even to their very idols.
