Sažetak
The present paper, based on the theoretical framework of cognitive semantics (Langacker 1999 ; Radden and Kövecses 1999), aims to investigate variety of the linguistic expressions containing "black" and "white" in English and Croatian. Contrastive analysis of the relevant corpora seeks to give insigths into the contextual examples of meaning extensions. Metaphor and metonymy are offered as a possible motivation for such peripheral, often figurative readings, whose meanings refer to nuances outside their normal area of designation. Despite the obvious cross- linguistic differences in the inventories of colour lexemes, we will try to confirm our assumption that 'black and white' ("good and bad" ; "light and darkness") dichotomy plays a significant role in our popular culture and therefore appears to be culturally universal.
