Sažetak
The paper problematizes initial activity of teachers whose goal is to acquire a better and more thorough insight into the state and possibilities of both the students and the class in the competence development process. The teaching process is the basic area of teacher’s activity, in which the teacher, in cooperation with the students, fulfills the set curricular goals. Since today’s demands of society, but also of the labour market require from the school and the teacher a constant competence development, every teaching activity of the teacher ought to be directed and marked by the teaching strategy as a long-term planned and structured activity whose aim is to use each teaching unit in order to achieve the set goals. It is by performing initial diagnostic procedures that the teacher can be provided with the acquisition of a wide range of data which he/she can and should use strategically for the teaching process to be organized in such a way as to insure for the teacher and the student a more efficient and quicker achievement of the set goals.
