Sažetak
In the “post-Lateran” era, the Papal Curia was trying to enforce its authority more efficiently in the local diocesan institutions. The cathedral chapters had special importance in its reforming plans – the cathedral communities were supposed to act as the local electors in the process of episcopal promotions. This meant that the cathedral communities acquired a distinctive role with regard to the corporative metaphor of the “mystical body of the Church.” The cathedral chapters, namely, were now recognized as the communities in charge of continuous diocesan regeneration. However, in the same period, in the Realm of St Stephen (the Hungarian Kingdom), the King’s authority presented a major obstacle to the implementation of curial reforms. The cathedral chapters played an important role in state administration, with their canons as the backbone of the ruling regime. This paper provides an analysis of the discrepancies between the constitutions of the Fourth Lateran Council and the reality of the Hungarian-Slavonian society of canons, as well as between the models used by the Papal Curia and the Hungarian King in order to link the cathedral chapters more closely to their courts. In this context, the influence of the Papal Curia and the King on the identity transformation of the cathedral communities will be studied. Their influence will be primarily examined on the example of the Zagreb cathedral chapter. It was the central ecclesiastical institution in medieval Slavonia, the Croatian territory integrated in the Hungarian Church system at the end of the 11th century.
