Sažetak
Forests of Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) covering about 200, 000 ha of the Croatian territory, inhabit the valleys of the rivers Sava, Drava, Danube and their tributaries, and account for about 10% of the overall forested area in Croatia. The total growing stock in these forests is 55 million m3, and the annual current increment is 1.4 million m3. Apart from Pedunculate oak, the forests also contain other species of the lowland regions, such as common hornbeam, narrow-leaved ash, and black alder. The forests are characterized not only by their mixed character, but also by the natural composition and structure, and by the size of forested complexes. Some extend over 30, 000 ha large, which is a rarity in Europe. The chief ecological factor playing a decisive role in the development of forest communities of the pedunculate oak is groundwater. The floral composition, as well as the majoritiy of other parameters, are determined by the terrain orography and the water regime. The 20th century saw the onset of a serious dieback of Pedunculate oak forests stemming from the changes in the sites, above all from the changed water relations caused by hydromeliorative operations and other anthropogenic influences. The three localities in the vicinity of Zagreb (Kalje, Turopoljski lug, and the Pokupsko basin), treated in detail in this paper were particularly affected by the changes and the dieback.
