Sažetak
The first record of the invasive alga Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea in the Croatian region of the Adriatic Sea was in 2000. By the end of 2004, a total of 35 different stations had been discovered, some of them in the National Park Mljet. The longest affected coastline was on Mljet Island where the alga was established along more than 12 km of coastline. The distribution of the stations suggests that the cyclonic Adriatic Current is the basic vector of its widespread dissemination. Recent records of the alga in Albania and Montenegro support the current spread theory. The alga develops extremely dense colonies on almost every type of the substrate in eutrophic and oligotrophic areas, from the surface to 30 or 40 m deep. A sparse colony has been found between 50 and 60 m deep. It grows at 40 m deep where the seawater temperature is below 18°C for 234 days per year, and increase above 18°C for less then 2 months with a maximum of 22.5°C. Its well¬developed colonies, at least 3 year old, in Vrsar (North Adriatic) are the most northern record of the species in the world. The surface temperature in this area varied between 26°C (summer) and 7°C (winter). That points out to the fact that alga is exceptionally eurithermic species.
