Sažetak
Fascism and socialism, opposed systems that strongly marked life in Istria (today north-west Croatia), during ‘30s and ‘40s began the race for modernisation form the very similar starting points – the lack of technology. This lack had to be replaced by a very valuable capital – workers themselves, and particularly those working in mines. The coalmines of Raša were very important source of “black gold”, the primary energy source of industrial imperative for both systems. Therefore, miners were particularly encouraged to harvest more coal via specific working organizations typical for each period that correlates to each ideological system. Bedaux and Shock work are two concepts, approaches and philosophies of work characteristic of Italian fascist ventennio and after II World War early socialism period whose similar, “innovative” technical aspects had to secure exponential increase of mined coal. Even if technical characteristics of both working systems are very similar, workers working under them are completely differently articulated ; i.e. under Italian one, in words of Antonio Gramsci, they are merely “trained gorillas” deprived of causal understanding of their labour while socialist Shock workers or Heroes of labour, were celebrated and proclaimed a “new type of intelligentsia” – the one that combines hard work, study and an idea of a serene future.
