Sažetak
Construction and demolition waste (CDW) has been identified as a priority stream because of the large amounts that are generated and the high potential for re-use and recycling embodied in these materials. Indeed, a proper management would lead to an effective and efficient use of natural resources and decrease of the environmental impacts. Embodied energy of concrete sandwich facade panel (ECO-SANDWICH) made from 50 % of aggregates recycled from CDW and mineral wool free from formaldehyde, phenol, and petrochemicals is lower than that of lightweight composite insulation panels such as those made of aluminium or galvanized sheets and polyurethane insulation. Moreover, this type of wall system has greater thermal mass. This optimizes the benefits of solar gain, reducing the need for heating energy by 2 - 15 % and also smoothes out fluctuations in internal temperature thus reducing daytime air-conditioning requirements by up to 50 %. In addition to savings in the use of energy for heating and cooling, which, in turn, cut CO2 emissions, element is both reusable and fully recyclable. In this paper, the environmental impact of the new ECO-SANDWICH wall panel is shown. All activities throughout the life cycle of each panel are included in the assessment, from raw material extraction throughout manufacturing, distribution, use of the panels and the disposal at the end of life.
