Sažetak
The goal of the article is to explore the performance of private health care institutions in Croatia, which is under great influence of the state of public provision of health services, as well as under the influence of the national health insurance system. The article focuses on the main aspects of business and financial analysis of private health care sector based on yearly financial reports of 974 private health institutions in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009. In the introduction, the term health care is defined from an economic point of view, health care financing structure is briefly explained, and the need for considering the role of private health care sector is illustrated. A distinction between the private and the public health care sector is made. Limitations regarding shortage of data and discrepancies of public sources are indicated. The private health care sector in Croatia accounts for less than 10% of the total income of the Croatian health care system, while private consumption also has a relatively small proportion of 15% of the total health care consumption. The first part of the financial analysis builds on aggregated financial data of the private health care sector provided by individual balance sheets and profit and loss accounts. The analysis is widened by using weighted sectoral averages of financial ratios. In the end, a few key conclusions are pointed out. Firstly, sectoral increase of average revenues and average assets is evident, although this increase strongly correlates with the rise of consumption in the rest of the health care system. Secondly, the private health care sector is small and fragmented in relation to the rest of the health care system. Finally, the paper concludes with financial and business specifics of private health care institutions in Croatia. The importance of the conducted research lies in the fact that it is one of the first attempts to illustrate business performance of private health care sector in Croatia.
