Sažetak
Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid fī uṣūl ad-dīn wal- ᶜaqāᵓid (Book of the Pearls of Utility: On the Principles of the Religion and Dogmas), identified as the final and the most important ᶜAḇdīšūᶜ’s dogmatic work, was found to be preserved only in manuscript. Consultation with Prof. Samir Khalil, the eminent scholar in this field, confirmed the necessity of reconstructing the entire manuscript. In order to arrive at a clear, correct and reliable text, it was necessary to produce a critical edition. So, the subject of this thesis, a research into ᶜAḇdīšūᶜ’s theology and Christology, turned to the preparation of a critical edition, limited only to his Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid. The research on ᶜAḇdīšūᶜ’s Kitāb farāᵓid al- fawāᵓid, with examination and evaluation of all available manuscripts, has culminated in this thesis, a critical edition of that important text. The edition is composed of three parts: study, text and apparatus criticus. The first part, the Study, consists of six chapters and a conclusion. The First Chapter is a general introduction to the edition. It presents the character and work of ᶜAḇdīšūᶜ bar Brīḫā, metropolitan of Nisibis, in his historical context. This is followed by the presentation of his edited works. The chapter concludes by discussing the motives of this critical edition. The Second Chapter includes the status quaestionis and a discussion of both the authenticity and the originality of the Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid. The status quaestionis provides all written records of the Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid in chronological order, from its composition until the present day. The authenticity of the Book is proved by written testimony of two ᶜAḇdīšūᶜ’s contemporaries. The confusion caused by the mistake of one copyist has been studied and explained. Suspicion regarding the originality of the Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid, caused by the observation of Assemani , has been resolved by the discovery of a manuscript providing the testimony of one anonymous monk who, before ᶜAḇdīšūᶜ’s death, saw his works. The chapter provides the original text, in Syriac, of this testimony and its translation. The Third Chapter is dedicated to describing all relevant extant manuscripts, examined for and incorporated into the critical edition of the Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid. It is followed by general presentation of the script and orthography of the manuscripts. The Fourth Chapter provides the methodology of the research. It delineates the steps taken in creating the edition, the process of selection of manuscripts, and the principles of edition and translation, offers clarifications of certain terms, and includes notes regarding the apparatus criticus. The Fifth Chapter is an analysis of and commentary on each chapter of the Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid. As the Book, in its thirteen chapters, discusses numerous and varied topics, the commentary attempts to explain the most important issues of each chapter, presenting and analyzing its structure. The Sixth Chapter is a brief overview of’s theology. It considers two main theological topics: Trinitarian theology and Christology. The chapter does not enter deeply into theological analysis, as that would necessitate a separate study, but it offers a starting point for systematicscholarly research into the theology of ᶜAḇdīšūᶜ. The second part of critical edition contains the Arabic text and an English translation of the Kitāb farāᵓid al-fawāᵓid. The Arabic text is accompanied by notes recording each difference between the manuscript sources and clarifying a number of the choices involved in determining the Arabic text. The notes accompanying the English translation explain terms or expressions important for a better understanding of the text. The third part is the apparatus criticus, which includes an index of virtually all the Arabic words from the Book, an index of the names mentioned, an index of non-Arabic words, a comparison of the Scriptural quotations in the text with the text of the Peshitta, a comparison of the Qur’anic quotations in the text with the text of the Qurᵓān, and a record of biblical and Qur’anic references. It is followed by a bibliography recording all sources used and quoted in this critical edition.
