Sažetak
The aim of this case study is to examine dominant and non-dominant language verbal fluency in older Croatian-English bilinguals. It has been proposed that balanced bilinguals demonstrate similar degrees of proficiency in both languages, whereas dominant bilinguals are more proficient in one of their languages (Butler & Hakuta, 2004). A research by Sandoval et al. (2010), on verbal fluency and language dominance in Spanish-English bilinguals, showed that speech production is more difficult in the non-dominant language. In this study, we will examine language dominance and verbal fluency in late Croatian-English bilinguals using qualitative and quantitative data from various sources: semi-structured interviews, informants' self-reported ability in Croatian and English, Verbal Fluency Tasks (VFT) in both monolingual and bilingual modes (Grosjean, 1985) and observation. A case study approach was adopted in order to allow for a detailed representation of our subjects and their linguistic practices along with the results of our data analysis. By exploring the interaction of various complex factors in the language of two individuals, we will look to establish linkages to broader sociolinguistic issues and better understand the phenomenon of late bilingualism.
