Sažetak
A bench-scale study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of enhanced coagulation for the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) from surface water. The jar tests were performed on a lake water samples by adding varying amounts of the two commonly used inorganic coagulants – aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3 × 18H2O) and ferric chloride (FeCl3), without prior pH adjustment and the use of polymer as a flocculant aid. In order to compare performance of coagulants, equivalent doses were calculated and applied in jar tests in an incremental manner. The NOM removal efficiency was assessed by measuring the residual concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which was used in this study as a surrogate for NOM. Ferric chloride was slightly more effective than aluminum sulfate (alum) in removing NOM. At the optimal FeCl3 dose of 29.2 mg L-1, enhanced coagulation resulted in more than 63% DOC removal.
