Sažetak
Transition to low carbon development has become increasingly important since economic, energy, food and other crises in 2008. In that sense, energy and transportation sectors together are the most important in terms of new investments needed, GHG reduction potential, and urgency to act – since business as usual means locking in to old technologies that with exist to many more decades and unable efficient shift to low emission economy. Due to their intermittent nature, renewable energy technologies such as wind and solar require energy storage, power system regulation and large investments in grid capacity. This is especially important in achieving power system that is largely based on renewable energy (90-100%). Transportation sector could make even more pressure on electricity generation, since fuel switch towards electricity means more electricity needed. If this electricity is generated in coal power plants, it could in the end lead to even more GHG emissions than if fossil fuels are used in transportation. Hydrogen is also one of the available options as the energy carrier that could be involved for transition of transportation sector to low emission (in case it is produced from renewable energy). More produced hydrogen would also provide an option for energy storage. Given the intermittent nature, energy peaks from wind and solar energy can be transferred to hydrogen for later use, and spent in transport sector when needed. This also provides more flexibility in power system network to offset production peaks to energy that can be spent later. Hydrogen technologies and their applications are investigated worldwide, from the aspect of sustainable development, cleaner technologies, energy efficiency and energy savings. This paper investigates potential future impact of hydrogen powered vehicles on a power system development in Croatia. Three different future scenarios were analyzed within the paper - estimated cases of 10 %, 50 % and 100 % shift to the hydrogen fuel cells powered vehicles in Croatia until 2030. It is important to note that hydrogen as the fuel is clean as much as much as it is clean energy and processes used for its production. To satisfy this claim using renewable energy sources is unquestionable and water electrolysis respectively. To accomplish hypothesis of clean and environmentally friendly hydrogen, calculations have been performed for the systems which include using of solar and / or wind energy. Given results represent directions in system development based on installed power of wind and solar energy, taking into account demands for hydrogen amounts. Paper finishes with conclusions and recommendation based on analyzing three different scenarios with hydrogen as energy storage in Croatia ; in what extent can hydrogen be used as energy carrier to store excessive energy from intermittent renewable energy sources.
