Sažetak
Strontium (Sr) is considered to be potentially essential element vvhich resembles calcium in bone metabolism. It occurs in high- calcium foods and is stored in bones and teeth. Chronic consumption of Sr deficient foods correlates with decreased bone strength. At present there is no available long-term biological indicator of Sr status in the human body. In this study we have analyzed hair Sr (HSr) in 311 (123 men, 188 women) apparently healthy adult subjects from the capital city region of Zagreb, Croatia. Hair samples were analyzed by the inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP MS) at the Center for Biotic Medicine, Moscow, Russia which is an ISO certified trace element analytical laboratory. We used the logistic bioassay sigmoid curve of median derivatives to further analyze natural distribution of Sr in the hair. Women accumulated more HSr than men (median men=0.867 pg-g"1 vs. median women=3.120 pgg"1). The physiologically normal range in the linear part of the sigmoid curve is D2-U2 (0.418-2.950 pg-g"1) for men and d2-u2 (0.846-7.260 pg-g"1) for women. Values below that linear range are considered to be deficient in Sr, whereas values above that range indicate excess. Here we presented a novel concept on how to assess the Sr nutritional status by analyzing their frequency distribution properties in the hair. For the first time we report the unequivocal difference in Sr deposition in the hair between men and women.
