Sažetak
Croatia is mostly rural country with rural development and nature protection as a main goals defined in National Strategy of Agriculture and Fishery. Agricultural land covers more than half of Croatian land area and therefore agriculture represents one of the main factors that influence biodiversity. The large part of NATURA 2000 area in Croatia is in farming areas, implying the necessity of development of adequate conservation measures allowing the balanced agricultural and other income generating activities with respect to biodiversity preservationtion. One of crucial preconditions for such a long term sustainable development is local participation, as the driving force of successful Protected Areas (PA) management.Understanding the perception of local residents towards Protected Area management enables the creation of feasible, long-term strategies for the implementation of participatory conservation. The results of survey conducted in Istrian region (Croatia) and presented in this paper support the idea of participative conservation models for PA managers and additionally serve to illustrate possible directions for nature protection in Istria, Croatia and neighboring countries.
