Sažetak
Routine post mortem examination of carcasses and organs in slaughterhouses is one of important tools in surveillance of bovine tuberculosis, in both Officially Tuberculosis Free and non-Officially Tuberculosis Free herds, regions or countries. Some TBC lesions could be detected only by palpation and incision of lymph nodes and organs. However, studies showed that the sensitivity of current meat inspection for detection bovine tuberculosis is low. Future changes of current system to visual only approach would further reduce the sensitivity of bTBC detection. In this work, we present results of traditional post-mortem inspection (with palpations and incisions) of routinely slaughtered cattle in Croatian abbatoir. During the course of one year (May 2014 – May 2015), 50 754 cattle have been examined at the slaughter line (46 811 beef cattle, 3 700 cows and 243 calves) by standard procedure laid down in Regulation EC 854/2004. Suspected bTBC lesions were found at slaughter- line in 46 of the 50 754 slaughtered animals (0.09%). The organs with suspected lessions were sampled and sended to the National Reference Laboratory for bovine tuberculosis for bacteriological investigation. Following homogenization, decontamination and concentration, the material was inoculated onto four Löwenstein-Jensen slants (two of them supplemented with glycerol) and two Stonebrink slants, which were checked for growth once a week for eight weeks. A GenoType® MTBC culture identification kit (Hain Lifescience, Germany) was used for further species identification of suspected colonies. Infection caused with Mycobacterium caprae has been confirmed for 14 animals (7 young bulls and 7 heifers). Nontuberculous mycobacteria have been confirmed in 2 additional samples. All of beef cattle with confirmed tuberculosis originated from Romania and all were in the feedlot in Croatia, with the ages between 13 and 21 months at the time of slaughter. The tuberculous beef cattle have been in the feedlot in 4 counties (Zagrebačka ; n=6 ; Požeško-Slavonska, n=2 ; Koprivničko-Križevačka, n=3 ; Sisačko-Moslavačka, n=3), in farms with Officially Tuberculosis Free statuses (n=11), i.e., temporarily cancelled statuses (n=3).
