Sažetak
Longevity refers to the length of productive life and significantly affects the profitability of dairy milk production. The dairy cows that stay longer in production reduce replacement costs, changing age structure of the herd at the expense of increasing the proportion of mature cows, when the milk production is higher than in younger cows. Also, cows with longer productive life were less treated with drugs, and therefore produce milk that is safe for human health. For genetic evaluation of functional longevity survival analysis approach is in use in many countries. According to recent researches longevity can be directly evaluated on the basis of actual productive life and by indirect selection on longevity which is based on the traits associated with longevity. Direct selection is limited due to the low heritability and the time it takes to collect the data necessary for effective evaluation and making selection decision. Continuous development of complex statistical methods and computer capacity as well as molecular genetic technology applicable for genetic evaluation of longevity has enabled a new approach in respect of longevity in the total selection index. Detection of bovine genome greatly assists in the identification of genes responsible for the functional longevity, which means that the possibility of the application of genomic information in breeding for longevity is not just a theory. Croatia is not performing selection on longevity using breeding value estimate. Our previous studies of the longevity in Croatian Simmental and Holstein cows have pointed to the convenience of using survival analysis and Weibull-model in the analysis of longevity and breeding value estimation. The model is recommended for routine use, as well as for the further development.
